Mexia countered Whitneys’s offense for 64-40 win

By Stephen R. Farris

The Whitney Wildcats didn’t make it easy for No. 23 ranked Mexia to invade their court Tuesday evening, especially with their team captain, Dayton Bean, driving to the basket and shooting long range bombs for his game-high 26 points.
However, the Blackcats countered with a much more balanced scoring attack with three players scoring in double-figures as Mexia rolled on to a 64-40 win over their host.
Mexia bolted out to a 15-10 lead after the first period behind Davion Carter’s five points, including a three-pointer, then shot out to a 32-21 lead at the half, thanks in part to some tough defensive work and key shooting by Chris Mathews, Travion Carter and Ty Gamble. Mathews and Prince Campbell garnered the majority of the rebounds in the period, leading to points at the other end.
