Walter Vernon Tyus Jr.

Walter Vernon Tyus Jr., 87, a member of the Coolidge community, passed away peacefully Nov. 8. He was born in Van onAug, 23, 1936, to Walter and Eneva Wilkin Tyus.

Throughout his life, Vernon was known for his unwavering dedication to public service and education.After earning a bachelor’s degree from the esteemed University of Texas, he continued his academic pursuits at Sam Houston State University, where he achieved a master’s degree in Education. Vernon’s passion for education led him to work as a public school administrator in the Wharton Independent School District. Vernon played a crucial role during desegregation, working tirelessly to ensure that every student had access to a quality education. He was able to implement many of the ADA mandates as well.

Throughout his 46-year marriage, Vernon shared a deep bond with his beloved wife, Dillie Margaret Otto Tyus. Together, they navigated life’s joys and challenges, offering unwavering support to one another. Vernon’s caregiver spirit shone bright as he faithfully attended to his wife until the end of her life.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Walter had a deep appreciation for the simpler joys of life. He found solace in engaging with his hobbies, including wood working, clock making, fishing, and most importantly, watching his beloved grandchildren passionately pursue their interests. He was a lifelong Sunday school teacher, dedicated Bible scholar and a member of the Lion’s Club.

Vernon will be deeply missed by his beloved daughter, Angela Tyus-Torp and husband William of Coolidge; his sons, John Tyus of Prairie Hill and Joseph Tyus and wife Darcy of Groesbeck. His memory will also be cherished by his grandchildren: Travis Torp, Kayla Torp, Hannah Tyus, and Aaron Tyus. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Bobby r. Tyus of Spokane, Wash., and his sister Barbara Ann Bogue of Texarkana.

To honor Vernon’s extraordinary life, services are as follows: A public viewing took place at Blair Stubbs Funeral Home from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 12, offering an opportunity for friends and community members to pay their respects.

Service of Death and Resurrection was held at 1 p.m. Nov. 13 at First Methodist Church in Coolidge. Immediately following the ceremony, a graveside service was held in the Mexia City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Travis Torp, Aaron Tyus, William Torp, Joseph Tyus, John Tyus and Glynn Tyus Jr. Honorary Pallbearers were Roy De-Friend, Connie Mack Hancock, Bill Ward and BobTyus.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to the First Methodist Church of Coolidge-Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 306, Coolidge, TX 76635, in honor of Vernon’s commitment to education.

Vernon Tyus Jr. leaves behind an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him. His genuine kindness, unwavering faith, and dedication to his family and community will forever be remembered. As we bid farewell, we find solace in knowing that his spirit will live on through the memories and love he shared with us all.
