Betty Lou Jones

Betty Lou Jones, of Mexia, passed away Dec.16, 2022, at 83. Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband, Welton Jones; her mother and father, Fannie and George Johnson; a sister, Hazel Hughes; two brothers, George W. Johnson and wife Sylvia Johnson, and Raymond Johnson; and other beloved siblings.

Betty’s memorial service will be officiated by Brother Michael Vestal at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Temple Baptist Church in Mexia. Visitation with the family will be prior to the service, beginning at 2 p.m. The pallbearers will be her grandsons, Colton Jones, Kyler Jones and Bradley Jones; her son-in-law, Roger Wooldridge; and Mike Barkouskie.

She is survived by her brother, John Preston Johnson; her brother-in-law, Lelton Jones; her sister-inlaw, Vera Mae Johnson; children, Steve Jones of Moody, Kimberly Wooldridge and husband Roger Wooldridge of Waco; grandchildren and spouses, Hailey Samford, Colton Jones, Kyler and wife Bailey Jones, Brittany Jones and fiancé Joey Flores, Bradley Jones and fiancée Alexus High, and Kerri, Dusti and Kelli Wooldridge; great-grandchildren, Zoey Flores, KJ and Rowdy Jones, Kameron and Kindsley High; and other beloved family members.

Betty Lou Jones was born in Coolidge on Oct. 22, 1939, to George Elmer Johnson and Fannie May Furlow. She attended Mexia public schools and graduated from Mexia High School. She met and married Welton Jones in Mexia at the furniture factory. They married at Temple Baptist Church; they were one of the first couples to marry there.

She lived some of her time in Irving and moved back to Mexia and lived on Highway 39 almost all of her life. She was employed at the Mexia State School until she retired to come home to help with her husband.

She loved arts and crafts and making things with her friend, Georgie Carroll. She went to Temple Baptist, was baptized, married and worked there as a secretary in her younger years. She enjoyed the Ladies’ Classes. Brother Thompson performed her marriage ceremony. One of her favorite things was going to church, and she loved the old hymns that were sung. She enjoyed socializing in church.

Thank you to the nurses and doctors at Providence ICU and the cardiology unit for all their time helping her and thank you to Ridgecrest Retirement Center for her years there. She enjoyed them greatly for all the friends she made there.
