Gerhard ‘Gary’ Huckels

Gerhard “Gary” Huckels, 85, of Crowley and formerly of Dawson, passed away Saturday, August 5, 2023 in Crowley. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Dawson Cemetery in Navarro County.

Gary was born Jan. 15, 1938, in Dusseldorf, Heerdt, Germany, to Herman Josef Huckels and wife, Christina Magdaline (Wirtz) Huckels. He immigrated to the United States in 1952, finishing high school in New Jersey and becoming an American citizen. Gary served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958 where he was a personal driver for Gen. Mark W. Clark.

After 25 years of employment, Gary retired from the woodworking industry and relocated to Dawson, Texas. He worked at K-mart and Walmart in Corsicana and later went on to work at Walmart in Mexia. Gary made many friends and lasting relationships over the years. He was a member of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marjorie (Becker) Huckels of Crowley; sons, John Huckels and wife Gina of Richmond, and James Lowell Ponder III of Dawson; three daughters, Felecia (Huckels) Etheridge and husband Jim of Dripping Springs, Theresa (Ponder) Wood of Crowley and Carla (Ponder) Pender and husband Roy of Midlothian; six grandchildren, Courtney Huckels, Jordan Huckels, Adrienne (Donaldson) Jernigan and husband Jacob, Jamison Perkins, Teri (Watson) Eller, Heather (Donaldson) Walker and husband Timothy; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
