Marita Compton

It is with profound sadness that the family of Marita Joy Compton announces her peaceful passing on June 13, 2023, at the age of 92.

Marita was born June 26, 1930, in Teague, to William Sumpter and Johnie Ione (Archer) Frazier. She graduated from Mexia High School and then continued her education at Westminster College in Tehuacana. Marita married Fred Leroy Compton on April 30, 1947, in Mexia. In addition to being a wife and mother, Marita, through the many moves her family made, held jobs as store clerk, a dental assistant and various secretarial positions. However, after retiring, her favorite job was being a volunteer for the Mexia ISD. She truly loved working with the kindergarten classes, especially during story time.

Marita loved nothing more than spending time with her family; she especially enjoyed cooking for them during the holidays. Marita C ompton was a hard worker and willing to tackle anything that needed to be done. She even mowed her lawn into her 80s! She was witty and had a good sense of humor. Prior to moving to Georgetown to be near her family, Marita was a longtime member of the Northcrest Church of Christ in Mexia. She was always willing, and enjoyed volunteering as often as possible in church activities.

Marita will be lovingly remembered by her children, Sharon (Gary) Preslar and Fred L. (Debbie) Compton Jr.; grandchildren, John Preslar, Crystal (Corby) Griffin, Charles (Samantha) Compton, Erin (Jason) Grenwelge; great-grandchildren, Sydney Preslar, Bailey (Larissa) Sims, Ashlynn Sims, Cordell Griffin, Kaitlyn Compton, Ethan Grenwelge, and Mattie Grenwelge; great-great-granddaughter, Mayvee Sims; her brother, William Sumpter (Caroline) Frazier; niece, Casey (Aaron) Irvin and their children, Aaron Jr. and Carson and niece, Kelley (Kyle) Westmoreland and their children, Clare and Walker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Johnie Frazier; and her loving husband of 45 years, Fred Compton.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at the Delaney at Georgetown Village and Concho Heart Hospice for their loving care and compassion.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, June 17, at the Northcrest Church of Christ in Mexia. Interment will follow in the Mexia Cemetery.
