Nelda Maddox LeNoir

Nelda Maddox LeNoir, of Mexia, passed away April 6, 2023, at Groesbeck LTC Nursing and Rehab, where she had been a resident since October 2019. Graveside services will be held in the Mexia Cemetery at 10 a.m., Monday, April 10.

Nelda was born on Nov. 1, 1928, to Douglas and Lora Bon Maddox in Mexia. She grew up in Mexia and was a graduate of Mexia High School, Class of 1946. As a teenager, she spent many Saturday nights with her friends dancing at the Fort Parker pavilion. Nelda married Sam Clyde LeNoir on Nov. 24, 1947. She was a devoted wife and mother to their son, Sammy LeNoir.

Nelda and Sam lived in the Forest Glade community and attended Forest Glade Baptist Church. Nelda worked at the Mexia Hospital and the Mexia State School. During those years, she spent her time between work, attending the sporting events that Sammy was involved in, bowling on the bowling team, and playing cards, and dominoes with her friends. After leaving the Mexia State School, Nelda was a caretaker for her parents, who were in the local nursing home in Mexia.

Nelda enjoyed cooking, her specialties were red beans, macaroni and cheese, and baking cakes, which her grandchildren and great-grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed. She did not leave the house unless she had freshly ironed clothes on that she ironed herself. Nelda and Sam were part of a group of couples from Mexia and Groesbeck who sponsored “The Armory Dances” in the 1960s and 1970s. After the grandbabies came, she spent a lot of her time at dance recitals, twirling contests, baseball, and football games as well as birthday parties and holidays in Sammy and Sherri’s home. In her later years, she enjoyed her annual birthday trip with Sammy to the casino.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sam C. LeNoir; brothers, Jack and Bobby Maddox; and nephew, Jimmy Doug Kerzee.

Nelda is survived by her son, Sam D. LeNoir and wife Sherri; granddaughter, Staci Allen and husband Brian; two grandsons, Stuart LeNoir and wife Amanda and Stephen LeNoir and wife Sierra; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Harris; and several nieces and nephews.
