Shirley Haught

Shirley (Hamby) Haught, 78, of Mount Calm, passed away Monday, March 4, 2019, in a Waco hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, March 9, at First Baptist Church in Mount Calm with the Rev. John Lawrence officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Calm Old Town Cemetery. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 8, at Wade Funeral Home in Hubbard.

Shirley was born April 10, 1940, in Greer, S.C., a to Giles and Edith (Wood) Hamby. Growing up, she lived in several different locations around the country due to her father’s military career in the Air Force. It was while the family was stationed in Laredo that she met Wardell Haught, who was also serving in the Air Force and they were married May 21, 1958. When the Air Force sent Wardell to Korea, Shirley moved to Mount Calm to live with his parents until his return.

They would remain in the Central Texas area living in McGregor, Waco, Groesbeck and Mexia while Wardell worked for General Dynamics and a munitions plant before settling into a 30-year career at the Mexia State School. While also raising four children, Shirley would eventually work at the State School in the Purchasing Department. After retirement from the State School, they made their home in Mount Calm and were active members of First Baptist Church of Mount Calm. Shirley enjoyed sewing and loved roses and many trips to Tyler to see the Rose Gardens.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years, Wardell Haught in October 2018; a brother-inlaw, Livy Mills and son-in-law, Gerry Alford.

Shirley is survived by two sons, Michael Haught and wife, Johnnie, of Houston and Steven Glenn Haught of Mount Calm; two daughters, Donna Alford of Waco and Sheila Haught of Corsicana; sister-in-law, Wanda Haught Mills of Hubbard; three brothers, Frank Hamby of Woodruff, S.C., Giles Hamby Jr. of Greenville, S.C., and Guy Hamby of Pelzer, S.C.; two sisters, Dianne Morris of Woodruff, S.C., and Vanessa Hamby of Pelzer, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Shaun Haught and wife, Rosie, of Fort Stockton, Elanor Haught, Gary Lawson and wife, Carmen, of Mexia, Kristin Cossey and husband, Anthony, of Hewitt, Allison Lynn Kidd of Deer Park, Austin Lawson and wife, Haley, of Mexia and Kelsey Outlaw and husband, Randal, of Mc-Gregor; eight great-grandchildren, Summer Haught, Nicholas Lawson, Lundyn Lawson, Landry Lawson, Elizabeth Cossey, Heath Cossey, Willow Lawson and Kyler Outlaw; two step-grandchildren, Krystal Alford and Matt Alford and several nieces and nephews and numerous other extended family members.

Pallbearers will be Dan Howell, Randal Outlaw, Austin Lawson, Gary Lawson, Rowdy Bock and Matt Childre.
